In December 1884 Catherine Gladstone, wife of four-time Prime Minister William Gladstone, celebrated St Andrew’s day with the Club. She gave a speech in which she praised the boys for their kindness; “I never make speeches, at least very seldom, but tonight how could I do otherwise when you have been so kind.” (December 1884, No. 19)
